CIDRZ "wields the medical might of the United States in Zambia, serving as a conduit for money, materials and training. Most recently, CIDRZ has fielded a new, powerful array of weapons: antiretroviral drugs … But it takes much more than free drugs to stop a disease that each year claims an estimated 170,000 Zambians, a recurring death toll equal to the great tsunami disaster. CIDRZ is fighting poverty, ignorance and superstition, and it's having to work within an antiquated, underfunded and overused public health system to do it." © Photo by Bernard Troncale, The Birmingham News -- From The Birmingham (AL) News
CIDRZ’s progress against HIV/AIDS has drawn attention from a range of news media, journals, and professional organizations.
Clinicians and researchers from CIDRZ have discussed their work at scores of events, including international forums in Bangkok, Thailand; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They have shared their knowledge and research findings in numerous articles in leading medical journals (a full bibliography is available on the CIDRZ Web site).
CIDRZ also is the subject of a 27-minute documentary film, “AIDS in Africa: The Plague That Thunders.” The film tells the story of AIDS in Zambia and what CIDRZ and other entities are doing to combat it. In the United States, the film was screened at the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in Birmingham, Alabama. It can be viewed online at the Mary Fisher Productions Web site.
